Pre-production

What are you putting in front of the camera?
Person: Gemma Alice Moore - I have decided to use a female actor to relate to the character of Red Riding Hood.
Wardrobe: She will be wearing an Red Riding Hood costume so that the audience can see the story and feel of the 10 second clip in a short period of time.
Props: My character doesn't need any props as she will just be skipping.
Direction: My character will be skipping towards the camera.

Do you know what is going to make up your background?

  • Forest / Woods
  • Potential movement: Fog
Overlaying images: Overlaying images of different trees so that the character walks behind some to make it look more realistic and not look odd.

Storyboards

In this shot I would have to record my actor full length on the green screen. This means i would need two lights to light the background and then a further two lights either side of the character to light them. However, as i am including the full length many shadows will be made so i will need to duplicate lights up to cancel out the shadows so that when i go into post-production i will be able to cancel out the green without shadows interfering. The actor would skip down the path and i would then create the background around there steps.

For this shot i decided to use a mid length shot. This is my second option incase the shadow's and difficulties facing with a full length shoot may be difficult. This will include the character well lit and a dark and mysterious background.

This shot includes a full length shot similar to the first idea.

Final Idea - Research

When looking at Research from different red riding hood scenes. Red riding hood always stands out against the background which is generally quite dull and mysterious. When in the video studio i will ensure that I light the background separately to my actor.

Visual Effects - Research

Little Red Riding Hood (Classic Fairy tales - Published in 2016 by Bonney Press)
"Oh Grandmother, what big ears you have!" She said. "All the better to hear you with" Was the reply. "Oh Grandmother, what big eyes you have!" She said. "All the better to see you with" was the reply. "Oh Grandmother, what big teeth you have!" She said. "All the better to eat you with!" replied the wolf as he bounded out of bed and gulped down Little Red Riding Hood in one delicious mouthful.
I decided to pick out this quote as I feel I could use visual effects to enhance the features of the wolf. For example, Instead of using a wolf I could use a person and adapt their features to this scene within red riding hood.

The Wizard Of Oz (Ladybird Books)
"Dorothy felt as if she were going up in a balloon. The whirlwind had sucked the house up and carried it away like a feather"
By using visual effects I could make the girl fly using a balloon. I could also take my own photography of a house and adapt it into this magical art style. This could then be moved by a 'feather' - which also creates the magic fairy tale vibe.

The Princess and the pea (Ladybird Books)
"Then one night there was a terrible storm. The lightning flashed, the thunder roared, the wind blew and the rain poured down. In the middle of the storm there was a knock on the door of the castle. The old king went to open the door."
I felt that this quotation had mysterious and cold feelings as I can imagine a dull and old-fashioned mysterious looking castle with candles and brick walls. I could use my own photography of an old fashioned building and create the visual effects of the storm and lightning. I feel the lightning could look effective and suit the scene well.

Beauty and the Beast (Ladybird Books)
"Then, at last, he saw a light in the distance, Thinking it was perhaps the light from a cottage he rode thankfully towards it. However, as he drew nearer to the light, he found that the trees formed a wide avenue. He rode up to the avenue and, to his surprise arrived at the entrance to a palace"
Similar to previous quotes, I feel that this style and art design could work well and portray the fairy tale well. I could film my actor walking on the green screen and then show them in shock as they reach the castle. They could they run in excitement. I could use my own photography of an old fashioned building, maybe a church or cathedral and adapt it to look appropriate. The visual effects would come in use on the background by creating lots of greenery, the light and trees forming a wide avenue.

Alice in Wonderland (Ladybird Books)
"It was a hot a day, and Alice was sleepy. She was wondering whether to get up and make a daisy chain, when suddenly a white rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her"
The rabbit would be the visual effects. On the green screen I would film my character walking about and then becoming sleepy and sitting back down looking around. When creating the visual effects I would use a happy and sunny background filled with bright green grass and flowers.

Roof toppers (Katherine Rundell)
"The bridge was indeed beautiful"
Although this a short quite with not much information I feel it created a variety of visuals in my head. I immediately imagined a bridge on a sunny day with crystal blue water with boats in the water. To recreate this I would use my own photography of the Worcester bridge and then adapt it with new layers to create a sunny and bright day. I would also use visual effects on the water to make it appear bright and blue.

More than this (Patrick Ness)
"There are cars parked along the road, but they're covered in thick layers of dust and dirt, blinding every window. And nearly every one has sunk under four deflated tyres"
I could use my own photography of a busy street and then apply effects to create the dusty and dirty atmosphere.

One Moment (Kristina McBridge)
"Pete, who was standing at the edge of the cliff looking down, gave us a thumbs up before turning away, his thick dreadlocks swaying with his head. He disappeared after only a few steps, the height and angle of the cliff hiding him from our view. And all we could do was wait"
Would use my model infront of the green screen looking around and then insert my cliff background. I could also include more of the background and surroundings including tree's etc.

Final

After Effects Process

When presenting the word another i wanted them to gradually come onto the screen. To do this I created each letter as a separate and introduce them into the sequence slightly after each other. I then added the Position effect and started the first keyframe with the letter off screen. I then introduced the new keyframe onto the scene where i wanted it to be finally placed. I did this for each letter with a gradual delay to produce the overall effect i wanted.

For the word negative, I had already used an effective typeface to make the word stand out. To intensify this I decided to add the 'Basic 3D' effective using the swivel option. I did this as i wanted it to be the main focus of that specific sequence.

I used the same 'Basic 3D' effect for the word Capture. However, I changed the tilt option so that i would tilt onto the screen. I did this as the rest of the text around it is fairly simple and 'capture' is a strong word within my audio. However, when using my typeface I made 'good' the focus on the page so I didn't want to mix a variety of typefaces together.

For the word focus I used the effect 'Camera Lens Blur' to create the effective of a blur coming into focus. I did this to link to the idea of a camera when focusing. I arranged the key frames so that it was blurred for a period of time however it still came into focus before the next word was on screen. This allowed the reader to see the blur effectively and also read the word clearly.

When producing my graphic camera on After Effects I used a variety of shapes to do a basic block outline. I then added a camera lens flash onto it by using the effect 'Lens Flare' - I changed the settings so that the flash was white and this produced the effect of flashing out completely onto a fresh white background ready for the next scene.

Final Layouts

Typefaces

The main throughout my project was 'No Type' from www.dafont.com. I chose this font to use throughout the whole project because it was simple yet still looked modern and fitted my chosen theme. It also doesn't show emotion to basic words that don't need it. I wanted to keep the main focus on words such as 'Negative' and 'Good' whilst experimenting with different type.

The word 'focus' was mainly being expressed through the effects of a blur and then coming back into focus, therefore I decided to use a simplistic font called 'Futurist Fixed Width Regular' from www.dafont.com which would be effective for this particular purpose. I didn't want to continue with the same 'No Type' font as I wanted the word to differ against the rest of the words it was around.

I used a cursive and feminine type called 'Hand' from www.dafont.com as it represents handwriting and could be quite personal. I wanted to use a cursive font as it portrays a happier message rather than if I was to use a block and bold text. Once in the final sequence, it also holds a strong contrast against the other type surrounding which reflects the positivity of the word.

To represent a negative and angry word I wanted to use a strong and dominant typeface. I used 'DK Face your fears' from www.dafont.com to present the feelings through type. As I had to previously use a handwriting style font I wanted to continue this but I also wanted to reflect the word. Therefore, I chose an handwritten font which looks like it has been rushed and done with paint. The colour also plays a strong part in reflecting the feelings of the word alongside the chosen type.

The word important I felt should hold a strong and dominant font, therefore I decided to use 'Tiza' from www.dafont.com. Against the main type 'No Type' used around this word, it stands out and is the main focus of the scene; I feel this represents the importance of the word.

Production

During my production I originally planned to follow my storyboard and digital layout designs. However, during production I realised some of my original plans were unrealistic and didn't work as well as I previously thought.

When playing back the voice recording whilst trying to fit the text into the correct timing, I realised it was too fast for the designs I had planned. Therefore, my final outcome differs from the storyboards I have created.

However, I did take aspects from my storyboards but developed them to make them suitable for my sound recording. The typefaces I originally planned on using changed but had similar aspects. For example: The typewriter style and cursive fonts.

When adding movement and effects into my designs this also contributed to the change within my designs. For example: I originally planned to use 3 variety of sizes when presenting the word 'Focus' - However, once I experimented with the software I discovered I could physically blur the word and bring it back into focus using effects and key frames.

When it came to my storyboards I initially wanted to follow the second image. However, I realised my voice over was fairly fast and didn't have enough time to be effective. Therefore I decided to give the camera a separate page allowing the flash to be more effective. I also changed the typefaces and added colour as the black and white lacked interest and looked quite basic once I had created it.

When producing the next scene, I wanted to use the same typeface and colour scheme as the previous. However, this meant I had to slightly differ from my storyboard designs. I used a cursive font for 'good' the same as my storyboards as I felt this was appropriate however I changed the colour as it didn't fit in with my colour scheme. I also decided against using the balloons as when entering them around the text it differed from the art design.

This storyboard was changed the most due to the art design. I used a similar font for 'negatives' as I felt it was suitable and looked effective. I wanted each small section to consist of the same art design and simplicity so it didn't differ and not flow well. I also made the shade of red slightly different to suit my colour scheme more.

When I entered the software I was aware I could make the focus appear blurred and gradually come into focus. Therefore, I changed my design completely. Once again, I wanted the designs to flow therefore I had to change the colours to flow correctly once played as a sequence.

I originally planned this section to consist of multiple different scenes. However, when I put them idea's against the speed of my narrator I discovered that it was too fast to be able to change so quickly onto fresh backgrounds. Therefore, I decided to use a continuous theme of my previous scenes and inject the same typefaces and similar colour scheme.

I kept this scene fairly similar to my storyboard design. The typeface slightly changed so that it was a continuous theme throughout each scene. However, 'another' changed as I didn't have enough time to introduce 5 words in the space of time in which my narrator said the word. I am still going to keep the aspect of the words coming down from above, however it will just be the one word with each letter appearing.

I had produced a camera on After Effects and added a camera flash onto it. However, when i connected all my scenes together it didn't fit effectively and suit the rest of the sequence. On its own, the design looks effective and work well as the flash blends out into a clear white screen ready for the next scene. But when put into the final sequence, it looks odd as it is the only graphic in the sequence. Therefore, I decided to change this scene and include it into the first section as it flowed better.
